Each year the Scottish Photographic Federation stage a Digital Championship competition for affiliated camera clubs from all over Scotland. Usually this is held at a venue at Stirling University but this year, due to COVID restrictions, it was held via a 'Zoom' Awards Presentation event' on Saturday 30th January 2021. The SPF announced both the Club Results and Individual Awards at the meeting. It was attended by the two Judges, Andrea Hargreaves MPAGB EFIAP/b BPE3 PSA4 and Marilyn Roberts DPAGB BPE3 from the Yorkshire Photographic Union. Together with 205 attendees on Zoom, they were welcomed by the SPF President, Gordon Rae, who led the afternoon's proceedings.
Irvine Camera Club had chosen to compete against 17 other clubs for the Ian Bowie Trophy, which required us to enter 20 images. This gave us scope to include the best work from as many of our members as possible. It also pitched us against the big hitters of Scottish club photography so we knew that a top placing would be very unlikely. However, having said that, we managed a very credible 13th place, surpassing the scores of other well-established clubs such as Falkirk, Perthshire and Fraserburgh.
We were thrilled that 4 of our images scored top mark from the Judges. Pete Haywood with “Feral Family” and, our rising star, Michele Campbell with all three of her entries – “We’ll Meet Again”, “Flower Girl” (Silver Medal – Best Portrait) and “Contemplation” (Bronze Medal – Judge’s Choice). Michele was thrilled to receive two medals, each of which was an achievement in its own right, but to get two in the championship is almost unheard of.
To the credit of our other members, everyone’s images scored well and they contributed to our overall score of 258. This wasn’t enough to challenge the bigger clubs and overall honours went to Dumfries Camera Club with 298 points with St. Andrews Photographic Society coming a close second with 294 points.
I believe our solid showing underlines recent improvements in the club’s photography in general as well as the exceptional performance of Michele and Pete in particular on this occasion. I am hoping that we can use this result as a platform to improve our standing on the national stage in the years to come.
